Shape Lab is a space that encourages art, creativity and other expressive applications of new technologies. We design learning experiences and provide mentoring for students and faculty working on creative projects at the intersections of art, science and technology. At the Shape Lab, we focus on the concept of Computational Art. By using the word “computational” we emphasize on the adoption of machines and algorithms as a vital part of the creative process.
History demonstrates that art-science collaborations may be catalysts for innovation. To fully embrace the intangible nature of the creative spirit, we facilitate open-ended interdisciplinary research with no concrete outcomes. We conduct complete creative research projects engaging our community in divergent and convergent thinking processes. The ShapeLab is equipped with digital fabrication tools, machinery and computers, but its most prominent feature is that it provides a working space for unstructured learning experiences. The Shape Lab is the result of collaboration between Engineering Technology and Computer Graphics Technology departments of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute. We have also established a partnership with faculty of the Arts Culture and Technology program in the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University.
